A thoroughly British appointment for Iris

We’re delighted to have been appointed to the British Council’s graphic design roster. This is an excellent achievement given that the new roster contains fewer than half the number of consultancies that were on the previous roster.

The roster was assembled through a ‘blind’ pitching process, in which the British Council viewed creative work without knowing who was responsible for it. It speaks volumes for our creative work that it is able to compete with some of the very best in the country to secure a place on this prestigious roster.

The reduced number of consultancies is a deliberate strategy by the British Council aimed at building closer relationships with agencies to help them manage their brand consistency better.

The British Council is the UK’s international cultural relations body with a mission to connect the UK to the world and the world to the UK. Its activities – whether in the arts, science, sport, English teaching, climate change or education – are aimed at nurturing greater trust and understanding between different countries and cultures. They also build strong international links to and from Britain, opening doors for the UK onto the rest of the world and for the world back to the UK.

We are very much looking forward to helping them with their objective of giving people – both in Britain and across the hundred-plus countries they work in – opportunities to learn, share and connect worldwide.

After a 6-way Yorkshire Water fight, sorry… pitch, involving some of Yorkshire and Manchester’s finest agencies, Iris has emerged dripping but triumphant.

The appointment makes us the sole agency for Yorkshire Water and is a significant win for the business. Going forward our role will encompass all of the utility company’s communications activities and we’re looking forward to helping them meet the challenges that all water and sewerage companies are facing over the next few years.

The government has just announced plans to create a new UK City of Culture initiative in 2013. And what better advertisement for Sheffield’s credentials for the role than the fact that the brand design for the initiative was created right here in Sheffield by Iris.

Iris were shortlisted for this prestigious assignment in June and went on to win a 3-way pitch after submitting a range of designs and ideas for the project. The chosen identity incorporates two ‘C’s, one contained within the other, to symbolise the part that cultural excellence plays within a city.

After gaining a coveted place on Business Link’s roster of agencies for the first time last year, there’s been a flurry of ‘WOOHOO!’ style emails round the office after we heard our re-tender to be on their roster for the next 12 months has been successful.

The news means the government funded business support, advice and information service can call on Iris for a wide range of services, from direct marketing and online to photography, events, print buying, mailhouse services, telemarketing, literature and stationery supplies.

Iris are about to embark on creating a new online experience for Sheffield Hallam University’s Training Foundry website. As well as visually improving the site, we will ultimately be looking to increase online sales. Based in Sheffield City Centre, the Training Foundry is one of the region’s premier ICT training organisations offering Microsoft, Adobe and Cisco authorised training in internet and web authoring, project management, databases, wireless networking and office applications. Work on updating the look and functionality of their existing site begins next week.

Helping tomorrow’s Richard Bransons

One of the traditional strengths of the UK is an entrepreneurial spirit that means we often punch way above our weight when competing with the very best from around the world. But where will tomorrow’s talented and energetic business thinkers come from if we don’t support, mentor and encourage them today? A recognition of this need to unlock the talents of young people sits behind an ongoing campaign of activities and initiatives by Make Your Mark and Iris are delighted to have recently won a pitch to handle two key communications projects for them.

Global Entrepreneurship Week UK is the biggest and most high-profile celebration of enterprise, featuring thousands of inspiring events and activities, while the Make Your Mark Challenge is a one-day enterprise competition for students aged 14-19. In 2008 there were over 6000 events and over 6.5 million people took part in the UK alone.

Global Entrepreneurship Week was created by Make Your Mark in the UK and the Kauffman Foundation in the US. Seventy seven countries took part in the events and some 25,000 events took place globally in the same week, involving over 3 million participants. From 2004 – 2008, it was called Enterprise Week, and part of Iris’s brief is to rebrand the initiative as Global Entrepreneurship Week UK.

The two projects will involve a range of communications aimed at students, teachers, businesses and partner organisations including government stakeholders. The campaign will include flyers, newsletters, information packs, posters, postcards, display stands and a variety of promotional giveaway items.

Ready to do the business for Business Link Yorkshire

We’re delighted to have been appointed to Business Link Yorkshire’s roster of agencies. Business Link Yorkshire is at the forefront of the drive to vastly simplify business support in the UK.

Although we’ve worked with Business Link in South Yorkshire for a number of years, Iris will be a new name to most of the team at Business Link Yorkshire, most of whom have come across from their West Yorkshire division.

Our work for Business Link in the past has included campaign development to support the Design Works initiative, event support for Women in Enterprise, and promotional material to support the SOAK event.

It’s still early days so we haven’t yet done any work for them, but we are very much looking forward to our first project.

A good degree of success: Sheffield Hallam University win

Our local, the excellent Milestone Restaurant and Bar, in the Kelham Island conservation area, has been helping us celebrate our latest Sheffield Hallam University win. So pleased were we with our latest account win that we made several visits to take advantage of its gastronomic delights (incidentally, Nic, Nug and Lenny can particularly recommend their Rosemary Infused Lamb Burger with rough cut chips and coleslaw).

The SHU win involved a 2am finish the morning before the pitch for two of the Iris design team, so there was also considerable relief that all the hard work had paid off.  The pitch was for the university’s Countdown Campaign, a phased 11-month campaign of communications to prospective students designed to help them hit the ground running when they arrive next August. We’ll stick some examples of the work as soon as it’s underway and approved by SHU. Watch this space.

We’ve been selected for team Yorkshire

Yorkshire is really changing shape, we can see that from our office window here in Sheffield, a city which has recently been described as one of the UK’s most “resurgent” cities.

We were absolutely delighted when we were appointed to Yorkshire Forward’s roster for marketing services. Yorkshire Forward is our regions development agency – their job is to create an environment in which businesses succeed, jobs are created, and our economy and wealth are improved.

Huge credit is due to our creative team, whose brilliance helped us to secure our place on the roster.

There is a general perception of being from Yorkshire, have a look at the movie to see what we mean, we can take a joke but we’ll be trying to put the record straight with our work for Yorkshire Forward.

After a last minute pitch, lots hard work and extreme enthusiasm, Iris won the TEVA account to develop a brand for one of their new flagship services. We were up against a number of other agencies and it seems our talent and wit obviously shone through!

Now that the dust has settled and the brand has been successfully developed for the new TEVA “Dispense in Practice” service we’ve started to create a number of interesting things.

We’re working on a direct mail campaign targeting all the differing levels of customers who use this kind of service, rewarding people with incentives, giveaways and help with training. We will also be rolling out across all communications including price lists, advertising and online training modules.
